Accessibility

Built to be read by everyone.

This site aims to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at Level AA.

What has been done

  • Page landmarks, a skip-to-content link, and one main heading per page in a logical order.
  • Full keyboard operation, with a visible gold focus outline on every link, button and form field. The mobile menu closes with the Escape key.
  • Form fields with permanently visible labels and error messages that are announced to screen readers.
  • Descriptive alternative text on photographs; decorative graphics are hidden from assistive technology.
  • Comfortable reading sizes and line lengths, and text colors chosen to meet AA contrast.
  • No autoplaying audio or video. Movement is turned off when your device asks for reduced motion.

Known limitations

Some archival photographs are small scans and cannot be enlarged without losing detail. The embedded video player is provided by Vimeo and may not follow every standard this site does.
